Why We Started
There is a lot of coffee in Australia. Most of it is average.
Not bad enough to complain about. Not good enough to go back for. Just coffee that sits in the cup and does nothing particularly memorable.
We got tired of not knowing what we were walking into. Reviews that said things like "great vibe" and "friendly staff" but told us nothing about what was actually in the cup. Influencer posts that made every café look like a nine out of ten. Word of mouth that turned out to be completely wrong.
So we built something different. A system that was fair, consistent, and impossible to game.
One Rule. No Exceptions.
One latte. One double shot espresso. Every single time.
That is it. We do not order off the menu. We do not try the batch brew or the single origin pour over. We order the same two drinks at every café we walk into — because that is the only way to make every review directly comparable to every other review.
If you have been to a hundred cafés and ordered something different at each one, you have not reviewed a hundred cafés. You have had a hundred different experiences that tell you nothing useful about each other.
We fixed that. Same order. Every time. One score.
What the Numbers Mean
Every café gets a number from zero to ten. We score on four things and four things only — taste, balance, strength and finish. Not the furniture. Not the playlist. Not whether the barista was having a good day. Just what is in the cup.
A 7.5 or above earns the Koffee Review sticker. That is the only way to get it. A café cannot buy it, negotiate for it or request it. The score decides. Full stop.
No Freebies. No Fluff.
We walk in as regular customers. We never tell a café we are reviewing them. We never announce ourselves before, during or after the visit. We pay full price, drink the coffee and leave.
No comped meals. No gifted coffees. No "we will give you a good write-up if you give us something in return." That arrangement exists everywhere in food media and it is exactly why food media cannot be trusted.
We pay. We score. We publish. That is the whole operation.
The Numbers So Far
We started in Brisbane. We have reviewed cafés across Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales and beyond. Every week we add more.
The goal is simple — build the most honest, consistent, useful café review database in Australia. One that tells you whether the coffee is worth your time before you walk through the door.
