Timeout published their list of the best coffee in Brisbane. Twelve cafes. Award winners, heritage buildings, converted bomb shelters, 24 hour espresso bars.
We visited all twelve.

The Scoreboard
Timeout hit rate: 5 of 12 hit Loved territory (7.5+). 7 of 12 cleared 7.0. 3 of 12 fell below 6.5.
Not bad. Not perfect either.
Bellissimo Coffee Bulimba: 7.9 LOVED — Timeout calls them the highest awarded roaster. The awards match the cup. Rich, full bodied, cocoa and caramel, long finish.
John Mills Himself CBD: 7.8 LOVED — Bold from the first sip. Silky microfoam. Sample Coffee on the bar. The hidden CBD gem tag is earned.
Coffee Anthology CBD: 7.5 LOVED — Bold, fruity, bright on arrival, smooth body carrying all the way through.
Industry Beans Newstead: 7.5 LOVED — Punchy. Dark chocolate, fruit and hazelnut through a full body. The Newstead Blend doing its job.
Bunker Coffee Milton: 7.5 LOVED — The converted WWII bomb shelter. Cool story. Better story: the coffee holds up. Nutty, chocolatey, gets better every sip.
The Middle Tier
Strauss CBD scored 7.4. Confident from the first sip, hazelnut and caramel, velvety milk, long finish. A whisker off Loved. Timeout's claim of some of Brisbane's best is close enough to true.
Death Before Decaf Fortitude Valley scored 7.1. Bold, chocolatey, smooth body. The 24 hour angle is the headline but the coffee works at 3am and 3pm. Solid, not spectacular. On a best of list for coffee alone it is borderline. For coffee at 3am there is no competition.
The New Black Fortitude Valley scored 6.9. Confident, earthy, nutty, consistent. Parallel Roasters doing its job. Good cafe. Best in Brisbane is a stretch.
Coffee Mentality Woolloongabba: 6.9 — Timeout leans on the Champion Coffee award. Awards judge roasts in competition conditions. We judge the cup you are actually served. Well made. Just did not tip over into special.
The Ones That Did Not Hold Up
Toby's Estate Newstead: 6.1 TAKE OR LEAVE — Their own roast, their own bar. Arrived moderate, stayed moderate, left moderate. Nothing wrong. Nothing right either. Beautiful space. But you drink the coffee, not the fit out.
Single O Newstead scored 5.8. Timeout calls them leaders in the coffee industry. In Sydney that reputation is earned. On the day we visited Newstead, it was not. Soft from the first sip, nothing builds through the middle. Great beans do not survive an average bar. This is the difference between reviewing a brand and reviewing a cup.
Blackstar Coffee Roasters West End scored 5.8. A pioneer since 2007. Sustainability credentials, carbon neutral operation, genuine local legacy. All true. None of it is extraction. Slow start, drops off before it finds anything. The story is 20 years old. The shot was pulled today.
Why Our List Looks Different
Timeout reviews cafes. We review coffee.
Their list weighs award history, heritage buildings, brand reputation, concept and atmosphere. That is a legitimate way to pick a cafe for a Saturday morning.
Our list weighs one thing: what is in the cup. Crema, extraction, milk texture, balance, finish. Same order at all 600+ cafes we have reviewed. Same scale.
That is why Single O sits at 5.8. We did not score their reputation. We scored the shot we were served. And it is why five of Timeout's twelve landed in our Loved tier. When the coffee backs the hype, we say so.
What Timeout's List Misses
Three of Brisbane's genuinely elite cafes do not appear on Timeout's list at all.
Zen Barista Manly (7.8) — golden crema, perfect timing, every visit identical.
The Twin West End (7.8) — flawless execution in a quiet street.
Clancys Espresso Norman Park (7.9) — punchy, smooth, a hidden gem.
No awards. No bomb shelters. No 24 hour trading. Just better coffee than most of the list above.
That is the gap between a media list and a scored database.
The Bottom Line
Timeout's hit rate: 7 of 12 above 7.0. Respectable.
But best coffee in Brisbane is a measurable claim, and on measurement, the list is half right. The top half is genuinely excellent. The bottom half is reputation outrunning the cup.
The overlap matters. Bellissimo, John Mills Himself, Coffee Anthology, Industry Beans and Bunker are on both their list and ours. That overlap is the real best of Brisbane shortlist.
