These three inner Brisbane suburbs get a lot of attention for coffee. But which one actually delivers?

Here is what the data actually shows when we compare them head to head.
West End (Currently Leading)
West End has the highest concentration of strong scores in Brisbane.
The Twin (7.8) is one of the standout performers. But West End is not a one cafe suburb. Multiple cafes score 7.0+ which means the suburb average is strong regardless of which door you walk through.
What makes West End work: owner operated cafes (people who care), local roaster partnerships, a coffee culture that expects quality. The regulars know good coffee. They hold cafes accountable. That pressure keeps standards high.
Consistency is noticeably better here than the other two suburbs. The floor is higher. Even the average West End cafes score 6.5+. In Fortitude Valley, the floor drops to 5.5.
Newstead (Strong Second)
Newstead sits in second place. Coffee Speed Dial (7.5) is reliable and a few other spots are close behind.
Newstead has a different personality from West End. More polished, more commercial, higher investment in fit out and equipment. The cafes look better. The coffee is slightly less consistent but the top end is comparable.
The suburb has good potential but still has some inconsistency. A couple of cafes are riding on the suburb reputation without matching the quality. Our scores reflect that.
Newstead is worth checking if you are already in the area. It is not quite worth a special trip the way West End is. But the gap is closing.
Fortitude Valley (Most Hit and Miss)
Fortitude Valley is the most mixed of the three. There are a couple of decent cafes but the overall average is pulled down by several places scoring in the 5.5 to 6.5 range.
The Valley has a nightlife and hospitality focus. Many venues serve coffee as an afterthought. The espresso machine exists because it has to, not because anyone cares about extraction quality.
When a Valley cafe is good, it can be genuinely good. Fave Specialty Coffee uses quality beans. But the execution does not always match the potential.
Fortitude Valley needs more careful selection than the other two suburbs. You cannot walk in blind. Use the map and check our scores first.
Head to Head Comparison
Consistency: West End wins. Smallest gap between the best and worst cafes.
Top end quality: West End and Newstead are close. Both have 7.5+ cafes. Fortitude Valley does not consistently reach this level.
Value: all three are similar pricing ($6 to $6.50 for a latte). No cost advantage.
Variety: Fortitude Valley has the most variety of cafe styles but that variety includes mediocre options. West End has the most consistent quality. Newstead has the most polished fit outs.
For espresso specifically: West End leads. The baristas in West End tend to have stronger extraction technique. Newstead leans more toward milk based drinks.
Overall: West End takes it on consistency and depth. Newstead is a solid second with room to grow. Fortitude Valley needs selective navigation.

If you want the highest chance of a good coffee, start in West End. Walk into almost any cafe and you will get a 6.5 minimum. The standouts reach 7.8.
Newstead is worth checking if you are already in the area. Coffee Speed Dial is reliable and the suburb is improving.
