We Visited the World's Best Coffee Shop. We Scored It 6.2.
There is a list called the World's 100 Best Coffee Shops. It is voted by the public and an expert panel, and it carries real weight. Cafes put the ranking in their windows. Media runs the story every year.
Toby's Estate in Chippendale was crowned the world's number one. This year it still sits in the global top five, alongside cafes from Norway, El Salvador and Singapore.
We visited. Same order we have used at 600+ cafes across Australia: one latte, one double shot espresso. Same scoring system. No panel, no votes, no vibes.
We scored the world's best coffee shop 6.2 out of 10. TAKE OR LEAVE.
What 6.2 Tastes Like
Nothing was broken. That is the point. Nothing was exceptional either.
The shot arrived moderate, stayed moderate, left moderate. Clean enough extraction, forgettable finish. The latte was competently made. If a suburban cafe served us this cup, we would call it a fair Tuesday coffee and move on.
But this is not a suburban cafe. This is a bar that wore the world's best crown, pulling their own roast on their own machines with every advantage a coffee company can have.
Expected more from a pedigree like that. Got a 6.2.
The Australians on the World List
The world's 100 best includes a handful of Australian cafes. We have visited three of the ranked names with the same order and the same scale.
Tobys Estate (former world number 1, current top 5): 6.2 TAKE OR LEAVE.
Coffee Anthology Brisbane (world top 30): 7.5 LOVED.
Single O Brisbane bar (Surry Hills original ranked top 60): 5.8 AVERAGE.
One honest note: the ranked Single O is the Surry Hills original in Sydney. We visited their Brisbane bar in Newstead. Same brand, same beans, different bar. Which is exactly the problem we will get to.
The One That Earns It: Coffee Anthology
Brisbane's Coffee Anthology sits in the world's top 30. Our visit backs it.
Bold from the first sip, landing at the front of the mouth. Fruity and bright on arrival, smooth body with the fruit carrying all the way through. Consistent from first sip to last, long lingering finish.
That is what a world ranked cafe should taste like. Brisbane's benchmark specialty bar, doing exactly what it is built for.
When the ranking and the cup agree, we say so. Here, they agree.
Why the World's Best Scored 6.2
Three possible explanations. None of them are complicated.
First: lists rank reputation, not extraction. The world's 100 best is part public vote. Public votes measure fame, queue length, Instagram presence and brand loyalty. None of those are in the cup.
Second: big operations drift. Tobys Estate is a large company with cafes, wholesale accounts and supermarket beans. Flagship bars in big operations serve volume. Volume smooths everything toward the middle. Moderate in, moderate out.
Third: one visit is one visit. Maybe we caught an off morning. But a world's best cafe does not get to have off mornings. Consistency is the entire job. We score what is served, and every cafe on our leaderboard was scored the same way. The 7.5+ cafes passed that test. The world's best did not.
The Cafes That Beat the World's Best
On our scale, these cafes all out-scored the former world number one. Zero global rankings. Zero panels. Zero press.
Bellissimo Coffee Bulimba (7.9) — cocoa and caramel, long finish. Australia's most awarded roaster pulling on their own turf, and it shows.
Zen Barista Manly (7.8) — identical quality every visit. Golden crema, perfect timing.
John Mills Himself CBD (7.8) — heritage hole in the wall. Bold from the first sip.
The Twin West End (7.8) — flawless execution in a quiet street.
A Bulimba cafe out-pulled the world's best coffee shop by 1.7 points. Nobody voted for it. It just makes better coffee.
What This Says About Coffee Lists
We are not saying the World's 100 Best is worthless. It maps the most influential, most loved, most famous coffee shops on earth. That is a real thing worth measuring.
It is just not measuring the coffee.
Fame is a lagging indicator. A cafe earns a reputation over years, then coasts on it while the panel keeps voting. The cup you are served today can be years behind the ranking on the wall.
Our system has no memory and no loyalty. Every cafe starts at zero, every visit. One latte, one double shot, scored on crema, extraction, milk texture, balance and finish. A world ranking cannot add a single point to that. Only the cup can.
The Bottom Line
The world's best coffee shop served us a 6.2.
A cafe in Bulimba with no world ranking served us a 7.9.
Trust lists for atmosphere, history and hype. Trust the cup for coffee. And if you cannot taste 600+ cafes yourself, we already did.
